Kristina Box, MD, FACOG, is the State Health Commissioner and leads the Indiana Department of Health. Dr. Kristina Box earned her undergraduate degree at Indiana University in Bloomington and her medical doctorate at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. She has been a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist in Indianapolis for 30 years. She serves on the Indiana Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative (IPQIC), an advisory council to the Indiana Department of Health to reduce infant mortality.
In Dr. Box’s current role as State Health Commissioner, she is tasked with addressing the issues that most impact Hoosiers’ health. In addition to infant mortality, those include lead exposure in children, ending the spread of HIV & HCV, addressing smoking and obesity, and many others. Today, the most significant need that Dr. Box is focused on is navigating Hoosiers through the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her role, she has committed to her staff and to the governor a strong desire to enhance Indiana’s trauma and public health system. She is also focused on reducing the health disparities that exist in all of these areas.
When we asked Dr. Box what advice she would provide the team at Herd Strategies as we celebrate our 10th anniversary, she said. “Pursue your passion, and you will love what you do for a career. Listen to your family, partners, patients, colleagues, constituents, friends – you will learn a lot. Do not be afraid to try something new or to step out of your comfort zone and keep an open mind about the potential different paths your life might take.”
