Maggie A. Lewis

#HaveYouHerd: Today’s #FridayFeature is someone who has been a client and friend of Herd Strategies since we opened our doors. Her work and accomplishments have led her to achieve unprecedented milestones and have raised the bar for those who come behind her. This monumental achiever is none other than Maggie A. Lewis, majority leader of the Indianapolis City-County Council representing District 10 and chief executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Indianapolis. To learn more about Maggie and her extraordinary work, keep on reading.

Born in Columbus, Indiana Maggie spent a part of her childhood growing up right here in Indianapolis. . After graduating from Columbus East High School, she enrolled in Indiana State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Health Education and Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Something interesting we learned about Maggie is that during her undergraduate program, she was a dancer for the Sparkettes. Since her graduation, Maggie has dedicated her entire career to public service and helping those in need.

Many will call her a trailblazer for women in politics and the nonprofit world due to her many “firsts”. ” She was the first Black female President of the Indianapolis City-County Council, is the first Black female Majority Leader, AND the first female Chief Executive Officer of the Boys and Girls Club-Indianapolis.

When asked what accomplishments she is most proud of, Maggie said, “My work has always centered around helping the community in any way that I am able to. I’ve advocated for public safety, transit, fair pay for all, pre-k, and many other issues I believe create equity and improve the quality of life for all. Family is very important to me and as the mother of a young son I have a responsibility to him to ensure I identify and support initiatives for families and our babies.”

When asked what advice she would give to Herd Strategies as we celebrate our ten-year milestone, she said, “Never stop, and never give up. I know this may sound cliché, but it’s so very true. I believe that every problem has a solution. If you are passionate about your goals, keep pushing forward and never look back.” This is great advice for all of us.

Currently, you can catch Maggie working effortlessly around Indianapolis.

We thank Maggie for her vision, passion, and commitment to being a voice and a leader. Make sure you connect with Maggie by following her on Facebook (@councillormaggiealewis), Twitter (@MaggieALewis), Instagram (@maggie71), or LinkedIn (@maggielewis).
