Pastor R. Janae Pitts-Murdock
“How kind of God!”
We conclude our "Spring Forward" theme with an official leader of faith and hope for Indiana, Janae Pitts-Murdock, Senior Pastor at Light of the World Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Pastor Janae's dedication to the call on her life has led her to achieve exemplary personal and professional accomplishments.
She shared that while she knew there was a calling on her life, it wasn't until she recognized her gifts and talents that her journey to the pulpit began. Pastor Janae further shared that she was only eight or nine when her spiritual mentor told her that she had a bigger purpose to pursue. This pivotal moment lit a fire in Pastor Janae early on, but it was only after graduate school, her acceptance of a position at the Pentagon, and the strikes of 9/11 that she knew it was time to enroll in seminary.
Since accepting the call to ministry, she has been lighting torches for those seeking Christ. She stands as an example for more female pastors to answer the call and take the lead from the pulpit. Pastor Janae would advise other women looking to attain leadership roles in the church to "Give their all to preparation so they are ready when the opportunity to lead emerges.”
She encourages change in Indianapolis by sharing her optimism, bearing in mind the pandemic provided an opportunity for new leaders to emerge and collaborations to flourish. She believes that imaginative leaders who are able to leverage resources and build partnerships are the change-makers that will move Indy forward.
Honoring her divine invitation inspires her to continue to devote herself to making an impact in Indianapolis. She looks to Light of the World Christian Church to increase its inspirational reach into the community by providing mental health support, economic recovery, and creative worship experiences in the coming years. With founding principles at the forefront of the church's purpose, they strive to continue to be a haven for those searching for salvation, in need of inspiration, and those looking for a community of believers.
