A’Lelia Bundles

#HaveYouHerd

Our Friday feature is someone who is known to refocus, refine and reimagine the world around her. She personifies the “Black is beautiful” theme and expands it with her work in journalism, activism, and television.

A’Lelia Bundles focuses on widening the beauty lens by challenging us to look past our fleeting outside attributes and instead go inward. She believes the foundation of the “Black is beautiful” phrase is rooted in having confidence and pride in simply existing in our skin.

She refers back to Jet and Ebony magazine, claiming the phrase “Black is beautiful” as a statement to change the outlook of our people. She noted when the media didn't see Black skin as beautiful—stating that she remembered the phrase becoming a mantra for her and other Black people around her.

#FUNFACT: As an author and journalist, A’Lelia Bundles writes biographies about the amazing women in her family. One being the incomparable Indianapolis-based entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker and Harlem Renaissance icon A’Lelia Walker. Her non-fiction biography “On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker” laid the foundation for the fictional four-part Netflix original series, “Self-Made,” starring Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer.

When she’s not conquering the small screen, A’Lelia writes to move the needle in conversations for the BIPOC communities in politics and social justice."She advocates teaching American history with its flaws as well as its triumphs so that young people of all races will have the information they need to make a better, more just society". She believes in being beautiful in your mind, body, and soul, so she takes self-care seriously by taking herself to the gym and practicing yoga.

We asked A’Lelia what the most beautiful thing about her is, and she stated, “Connecting people who she knows would benefit from knowing each other.” And “being comfortable with saying what she thinks.”

Presently, She has partnered with Sundial Brands and Walmart this month in launching the new haircare line, “MADAM by Madam C. J. Walker". All while finishing up her 5th book, a biography on the life of A’Lelia Walker (Madam C.J Walker's daughter), with a release date sometime in 2023.

In summary, we are excited for A’Lelia’s warm spirit to enhance our perspectives through her writing, engagements, and products.
