Robert Vane

This month, the Herd is highlighting local leaders across various professions, showcasing how they navigate career pressures and maintain their mental health in an effort to #StressLess. This week’s feature is Robert Vane, veteran, president and CEO of a veteran business enterprise and decorated public relations professional.

Robert Vane served in the United States Army for three years as a public affairs specialist and broadcast journalist. While in the military, Robert was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, he earned undergraduate degrees in political science and history and a masters degree in medieval history from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. He then served as communications director for the Indiana Republican Party and deputy chief of staff and communications director for Mayor Greg Ballard.

In 2010, Robert founded Veteran Strategies, Inc., a federally-certified veteran business enterprise specializing in media relations, public outreach, crisis communications, speech writing and content creation. He has garnered extensive experience in crisis communication strategy and management for schools, corporations and individuals in and around Indianapolis. In 2014, Robert worked as part of the team that shaped the communications strategy for the $160 million agreement between Pacers Sports and Entertainment and the Capital Improvement Board. He also directed the successful $272 million referenda effort for Indianapolis Public Schools in 2018, spearheading public outreach, media and voter contact. Irrefutably, Robert’s work has continued to leave a lasting impact on Indianapolis and its residents.

No matter how rewarding, working in public relations can be challenging. Competing deadlines and client crises add pressure to stressful situations. Robert shared that pitching stories and setting client expectations are equally difficult. However, he leans on advice and support from friends who believe in his work and celebrate his successes.

In any career, having something that grounds and motivates you is paramount. As a veteran, Robert knows first-hand the many challenges veterans face when transitioning into civilian life. Leaving a structured environment where everyone looks out for one another can be overwhelming. Robert finds purpose in and supports his community by providing pro bono public relations services for veterans and veteran organizations.
