Joey French - Music Producer

As we continue to celebrate the #SongsOfSummer, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the minds behind the music: the producers. Joseph French, known professionally as Joey French, is a record producer and recording engineer here in Indianapolis. His dedication and passion for music has allowed him to work with major artists such as Waka Flocka Flame and Mark Battles, and has also landed him production on several commercials. Continue reading to learn more about Joseph and his passion for production.

Q: Where did your passion for music originate?

A: Music became a passion at an early age from play in church, high school marching band and listening to classic albums. I would study the groove/bounce. I would spar and collaborate with other producers/songwriters, DJs and musicians to build my production chops.

Q: When did you start creating music?

A: I started creating music at the age of 14. My parents bought me a keyboard with recording features to build my own compositions. The first time I heard "Big Pimpin" by Jay-Z ft. UGK really set the tone for how far I could stretch my own creativity.

Q: What artists have you worked with? Who was your favorite artist and why?

A: I've had the pleasure working with Waka Flocka Flame, 2K Baby, Mark Battles, UG Skywalkin', Devon Golder and Nappyville. I’ve also landed production on TV/film and commercials (FOX Network,CBS Sports and ESPN, etc...). Working with each artist offered a unique experience. No matter how seasoned the artist, one prepared me for the next, or for the next opportunity.

Q: What is the most important aspect of producing music?

A: Understanding how to read the room. Knowing how to stretch each artist and take them out of their comfort zone.Be open to suggestions and never prejudge your collaborations.

Q: What is your favorite part about producing music?

A: Making tracks and mixing the record.

Q: Do you have a creative process? If you don't mind sharing, what does your creative process look like?

A: I'm a blank canvas, I really let the vibe tell me what needs to happen musically. Funny thing is I'm not really inspired by music. I'm inspired by watching movies and having deep conversations. Over the years, I've learned how to stay organized and keep a signature flow for consistency.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share?

A: To all creatives, Keep God First 1. Keep a great attitude 2. Understand your opportunity 3. Take control 4. Be Prepared 5. Maintain a great attitude 6. Work a full day 7. Work correctly 8. Be on time
