Fred Payne
In April, Herd Strategies is celebrating National Volunteer Month by highlighting volunteer organizations and opportunities, showcasing ways we can use our time, talents and treasures to #giveback and uplift our communities. This week’s feature is Fred Payne, president and CEO of United Way of Central Indiana, a lifelong volunteer who helps remove barriers and provide resources so Central Indiana residents and communities can live out their true potential.
Fred Payne spent his early career practicing employment and labor law. He then served as an executive at Honda’s Indiana Auto Plant (IAP), followed by his appointment by Governor Eric Holcomb as Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD). It was while working with DWD and hearing the stories of challenges facing Hoosiers throughout the state that he was inspired to take on a leadership role at United Way. He knew instinctively that, with dedicated resources, barriers to individual and community well-being can be removed.
Volunteerism is important to Fred, as serving others was foundational to his upbringing. “I have seen and been part of the change that comes through volunteerism since I was a child,” Fred emphasized. “I am the youngest of eight children, and my parents instilled in us at an early age to serve others and do anything we could to help people live their best lives.”
United Way of Central Indiana is fueled by an army of volunteers. No matter their passions, location or availability, volunteers contribute to hundreds of opportunities, projects and community organizations. “Last year alone, 5,392 people volunteered, putting in more than 18,000 hours to community organizations in Central Indiana,” Fred noted.
Fred invites all those who are interested in volunteering to learn more by visiting the Central Indiana volunteer portal or #giveback through programs like ReadUP or Indy Free Tax Prep. Volunteers are also needed for Go All IN, United Way of Central Indiana’s signature community service day.
