I walked into Herd Strategies on August 15, on what I thought was my last day of work as my time as an intern had come to an end.

Jihada asked me, “Are you sad to be leaving?”
“Yes, I wish I could stay longer,” I replied.
“You know you can stay if you want? If there is anything you take away from this experience, is to never be afraid to ask for what you want.”

Jihada was right. I should have asked if I could stay longer. It never occurred to me to just ask. The worse thing they could say is ‘no.’ Even then, at least I would have an answer instead of wondering “what if?”

I learned a big life lesson on August 15 about the importance of asking for what you want in life. I did not initially ask out of fear of rejection. I was allowing fear to hold me back and take control of my direction in life. To all those who are reading, have the courage to ask for what you want. At the end of the day, it’s better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all.

Today, I am still happily employed at Herd Strategies. I thank Jihada for encouraging me to speak up, use my voice and make my wishes heard. I’ll leave you all with this quote by a music icon: “A lot of people are afraid to say what they want. That’s why they don’t get what they want.” – Madonna.
