Does anyone remember Miss Manners?  Miss Manners … you know, the lady that wrote the weekly advice column offering up valuable advice about proper etiquette. Does her name ring a bell for you?

I sure do miss her. I think we all can agree that lately we are either experiencing or witnessing people being unkind for no real apparent reason.  Whether it be workplace pressures, increasing demands from our families and loved ones, or conflict within our community and nation people are being mean to one another.

While Miss Manners no longer writes her weekly column she can still be found on Twitter doling out words of wisdom under the Twitter handle @reallmissmanners. You will be happy to know that her penchant for espousing good old fashion common sense is still intact and her commitment to remaining the self-proclaimed the pioneer mother of today’s civility movement still remains her life goal.

Now that 2018 is off and running I would be remiss if I didn’t think about Miss Manners and take this time to remind us of the importance of good manners and why we need to be kind to one another. It’s really not that difficult. We just have to make the decision to do it. So here are few things that we should all remember as we start off the New Year:

  1. People interact with your brand prior to meeting with you. Make sure your brand can stand on its own when you’re not around
  2. Don’t hide the truth. Open, honest, transparent communication is critical to your success. Acting like you don’t see the big pink elephant in the corner doesn’t make the elephant go away. It makes you look like your either hiding something or in denial. Tell the truth. Integrity goes a long way with anyone who interacts with your brand.
  3. Listen to the feedback of others. Groupies tell you what you want to hear, friends tell you what you need to hear and pearls of wisdom come from places you would least expect. Be open to constructive feedback and don’t be quick to become defensive.
  4. Be kind to one another. The elders say you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. This is so true. Kindness goes a long way. Being kind is so much easier and it brings you closer to your goal – particularly if you have to work with people or in circumstances you don’t care for.
  5. Be kind to yourself. This goes without saying. If you treat yourself with kindness, chances are others will do the same. Being unkind to yourself creates an opportunity for people to be unkind towards you. If you don’t protect yourself, who will?

So there you have it. Make Miss Manners proud and be kind to one another. If you’re in doubt about what you should do or say just remember the golden rule and treat others how you would like to be treated. Now that is just plain common sense.

Good luck!
